  1. You are over-simplifying this.

You are right that the current proposal sounds exactly like the one which was raised in Israel but this is just a proposal and it'll have to got through a legislation process in order to be accepted and there are already saner voices (in saner media, lookup in google news for more items about this) raising exactly the right issues – that parents will get the false sense of security for their children and the issues of privacy of people who opt-out (from the SMH).

About the DMCA – I don't know – piracy here is as ripe as anywhere else. And maybe the change of government from a strongly-pro-American liberal to a less pro-American Labour will start a process to reverse some of the IP-related decisions made in the last few years.

As for Jews being worried about identifying themselves – this sounds like another media hype (do you have a link? Have something happened recently that triggered this comment from you?) – I'm not more worried about identifying myself as a Jew here in oz then I was about identifying my leftist views in Israel, probably far less.

Amos (still from a jungle in Brazil, but at least I got Ubuntu connected through that modem :-).

  2. Some more news about this: http://www.australianit.news.com.au/story/0,24897,23001130-15306,00.html
His predecessor saw the light and backed down from supporting these filters once she learned what they actually mean, and she wasn't considered the brightest in that area by the industry or the consumers.

That detail aside – I think you show a bit naive inclination to take such things too literally – just because this law is proposed in Australia doesn't necessarily mean that people there will have less privacy than in Israel since the practice and the level of compliance to the law is different – see how people were surprised and upset about Ituran taking the privacy laws by the letter in the case mentioned by Effi – such a thing wouldn't be an issue in Australia because people and organizations there are very much aware of such things and would know better about arranging for the right access rights beforehand while in Israel people are not even aware of the law, half-expect everyone to tress-pass over the line now and then, and are aghast when someone refuses to do so.

In that vain – having someone's Israeli ID means that you can find tons of stuff about them from many bodies simply because this ID is used as a master join key for so many databases scattered around the country.

  4. From a couple of episodes of that British car show that you watch (forgot its name right now, Top Gear?) I'd say Iceland is a heaven, and maybe you get an EU passport on the way since its an autonomic territory of Denmark (but then again – you get EU laws, for better or worse, I think I just read that a 17 y/o kid was "questioned" by the police there because he managed to wrangle his way through the White House telephone system to a direct line to W by providing information about his prime minister found on Wikipedia, or somesuch).

As for Israel being the default – still it looks to me like your evaluation of the situation is too "black-vs.-white" just based on words in newspapers and you miss some perspective on how things really affect the people in the field.
It doesn't sit right in my mind to hear such comments coming from someone with such a broad knowledge of the world as you.

Maybe you should sit down with Marc and get a dose of perspective, I got some from him over quarter century that I know him.
